The State Theatre Blog

This is a blog dedicated to keeping you updated on all that is The State Theatre of downtown State College, PA. On this blog you will find info on the concerts, films, and other special events that are upcoming at The State. This site will be focused on bringing more info on the events than you can normally find at The State's regular homepage. We here at The State Theatre Blog are very interested in what you think, so we overwhelmingly encourage you to join in on the blogging fun.

Last Two Nights for Choke

There are only TWO more nights to catch Choke, the adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk' s best seller staring Sam Rockwell. In case you don't know the story goes like this:

Victor Mancini is a medical-school dropout who has devised an ingenious scam to pay elder care for his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother: he pretends to choke on pieces of food while dining in upscale restaurants. He then allows himself to be "saved" by fellow patrons who, feeling responsible for Victor's life, go on to send checks to support him. When he's not pulling this stunt, Victor cruises sexual addiction recovery workshops for action, visits his addled mom, and spends his days working at a colonial theme park [

Stephen Holden from the New York Times praises Choke saying, "An entertaining collection of vignettes strung together by a sarcastic loudmouth whose heart is breaking under his sophomoric bravado [nyt]." If you enjoy black comedys or have read any previous works by Palahniuk (Fight Club, Rant) you will enjoy this film. Check out the trailer for Choke below.

Choke tonight 1/14 at 7:00 PM & 9:30 PM as well as tomorrow 1/15 at 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM.
